The figure formed by joining the midpoints of the sides of a rectangle is a rhombus. A rhombus is a quadrilateral with four equal sides and diagonals intersects and perpendicular to each other.
Area of the rhombus is half of the product of its diagonals. In this case, diagonals will be the length and breadth of the rectangle.
( Please try to draw a rectangle and rhombus by joining midpoint of the rectangle on a rough sheet, you will get a clear idea )
