Rob and David live 200 miles apart. Deciding to have a picnic,they both start driving at 9:00 a.m., traveling in a straight line towards each other. Rob drives at a steady speed of 50 miles per hour, and David drives at a steady speed of 30 miles per hour. What is the time when they meet for their picnic?

A. 11:30 a.m.
B. 1:00 p.m.
C. 1:30 p.m.
D. 2:00 p.m.
E. 3:40 p.m.

relative speed = 80 mph
time ; 200/80 ; 2.5 hrs
so 9 + 150 mins ; 11:30
IMO A

Since both travelling in opposite directions, their speed together will be = 50+ 30= 80
Distance to be covered = 200

Totak time = Distance / speed = 200/80 = 5/2 = 2.5 hrs= 9+2hrs30min = 11.30 ==> Option A

C. 1:30 p.m.
D. 2:00 p.m.
E. 3:40 p.m.
Solution:

We can let t = the driving time for both Rob and David since they each depart at 9:00 am. The total distance they will travel is 200 miles, so we have the equation:

50t + 30t = 200

80t = 200

t = 2.5

We see that 2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes, so they will meet at 11:30 am.

Answer: A

Answer A

R * T = D
Adding both the rates = 50 + 30 = 80

80 * T = 200
T = 2.5

Started at 9:00 am after 2.5 hours = 11: 30 am
