A group of ten candy bars has an average cost of $0.89 per candy bar. How many additional bars must be bought at the cost of $0.72 a piece to bring the average below $0.80?

A. 8
B. 9
C. 10
D. 11
E. 12

Let's bring it to exactly 0.8 and then we will add another 0.72 bar to bring the average below .8

This is a weighted avg problem now with 2 grps of cost .72 and .89 leading to an avg of .80
w1/w2 = (.89 - .8) / (.8 - .72) = 9/8

So for every 8 expensive candy bars, we should have 9 cheaper bars.
For 10 expensive bars, we should have (9/8)*10 = 11.25 i.e. 12 cheaper candy bars.

Answer (E)
