Tarik can complete a job in 12 minutes. If Andy helps Tarik, they can complete the job in 4 minutes. How long would it take for Andy to complete the job on his own?

A. 5 minutes
B. 6 minutes
C. 7 minutes
D. 8 minutes
E. 9 minutes

OA : (B) 6 mins

In such questions always calculate the one day work of an individual.
Tarik's one day work is 1/12. And Andy's and Tarik's combine work is 1/4,
So it is
1/12+1/x=1/4
1/x= 2/12 i.e. 1/6
Reverse it and you will get the time required by Andy to complete the work all alone. Hence 6mins

Consider 12 units of work to be done ( choosing 12 because of 12,4 ).

So Tarik does 1 unit of work in 1 minute.
Together A + T can complete the work in 4 mins which means they do 3 units of work in 1 minute. Now since T does 1 unit of work in 1 min => Andy is doing 2 units of work in 1 min. Hence to complete 12 units Andy will take 6 mins

A. 5 minutes
B. 6 minutes
C. 7 minutes
D. 8 minutes
E. 9 minutes

Letting r = the number of minutes for Andy to perform the job by himself, we can create the equation:

1/12 + 1/r = 1/4

Multiplying by 12r, we have:

r + 12 = 3r

12 = 2r

6 = r
