A school has 3 freshmen for every 4 sophomores and 5 sophomores for every 4 juniors. If there are 240 juniors in the school, how many freshmen are there?

A. 200
B. 215
C. 220
D. 225
E. 230

3 freshmen for every 4 sophomores means that the ratio of freshmen/sophomores = 3/4 (or 3:4) - (1)

5 sophomores for every 4 juniors means that the ratio of sophomores/juniors = 5/4 (or 5:4) - (2)

Multiplying (1) by 5 and (2) by 4, we can infer that we have 15 freshmen for every 20 sophomores, and for every 20 sophomores we have 16 juniors

Hence, for every 15 freshmen, we have 16 juniors (or for every 16 juniors, we have 15 freshmen)

NOW, given that the school has 240 juniors, we equate the ratio accordingly, i.e. (15/16)*240 = 225 (D)

given
3f=4s
and 5s=4j
j=240
so s= 240/4 ; 60*5 ; 300
and 300/4 = 75*3 ; 225
