Given:
    • A scale on a map states that every \(\frac{1}{4}\) of an inch represents 20 miles
    • The distance between two cities on the map = 3.5 inches

To find:
    • The actual distance between the two cities in miles

Approach and Working Out:
    • Given, 0.25 inch = 20 miles
    • Implies, 3.5 inches = 0.25 * 14 = 20 miles * 14 = 280 miles

Hence, the correct answer is Option E.

A scale on a map states that every 1/4 of an inch represents 20 miles. If two cities are \(3\frac{1}{2}\) inches apart, how many miles are actually between the two cities?

A. 14 miles
B. 20 miles
C. 125 miles
D. 230 miles
E. 280 miles

We can create the following proportion:

(1/4)/20 = 3.5/n

1/80 = 3.5/n

n = 80 x 3.5 = 280

Answer: E
