The average weight of 26 dogs was found to be 12.5 kg. When 1 more dog was added to this group, the average weight of the dogs was found to be 500gm more than the previous average weight. Find out the weight of the new dog that is added to the group

a. 20kg
b. 25kg
c. 26kg
d. 30kg
e. None of the above

Notice that the sum of the weights of the 26 dogs is 12.5 x 26 = 325 kg. Let n = the weight of the dog, in kg, added to the group. We can create the equation (note: 500 g = 0.5 kg):

(325 + n)/27 = 0.5 + 12.5

325 + n = 13 x 27

325 + n = 351

n = 26

b. 25kg
c. 26kg
d. 30kg
e. None of the above
Solution:

  • Average weight of 26 dogs = 12.5 kg
  • Sum of weights of 26 dogs \(=12.5\times 26=325\) kg
  • let the weight of the new dog be x kg
  • Then sum of weights of 27 dogs \(=325+x\). Whereas average of these 27 dogs \(=\frac{325+x}{27}\)
  • According to the question, \(\frac{325+x}{27}=13\)
    \(⇒325+x=351\)
    \(⇒x=26\)

Hence the right answer is Option C
