The 9 percent commission is given to Pat only when the price of the item exceeds $9000.
If the price of the item is $(9000 + x), Pat receives a commission of 9% on the ‘x’.
Looking at this, clearly, using equations looks fairly obvious. However, you can always work backwards, using the numbers given in the question.
The question says that Pat received a commission of $405. This $405 represents 9% of x. Clearly, 405 is 9% of 4500. In other words, this 4500 represents the ‘x’ mentioned above.
So, the price of the item is $13500. The correct answer option is C.
