John is now 10 years older than Janice. If 10 years ago John was twice as old as Janice, how old will John be in 5 years?

A. 10
B. 18
C. 23
D. 25
E. 35

Given:
1. John is now 10 years older than Janice.
2. 10 years ago John was twice as old as Janice

Asked: How old will John be in 5 years?

1. John is now 10 years older than Janice.
Let the age of Janice be x => Age of John = x+10

2. 10 years ago John was twice as old as Janice
x+10-10 = 2(x-10) = 2x - 20 = x
x = 20
John is now x+10 = 30 years old
How old will John be in 5 years = 30+5 =35

Answer E

John - J , Janice - A

J = 10 + A

J - 10 = 2 ( a - 10 )

10 + A - 10 = 2A - 20

A= 20

John's current age = 10 + A = 10 + 20 = 30

After after 5 years = 30 + 5 = 35

John is now 10 years older than Janice => John = Janice + 10 ----------------(1)

10 years ago John was twice as old as Janice => (John - 10) = 2 (Janice - 10)

=> John - 10 = 2 Janice - 20

=> John = 2 Janice - 10 ----------------(2)

From (1) and (2),

=> Janice + 10 = 2 Janice -10

=> Janice = 20

=> John = Janice +10 = 20 + 10 = 30

John in 5 years => John + 5 = 30 + 5 = 35
