How many ounces of water must be added to 48 ounces of alcohol to make a solution that contains 25% alcohol?

A) 140
B) 144
C) 148
D) 152
E) 156
Solution:

If the original solution is 48 ounces of pure alcohol, then one must add 3 times that amount, i.e., 144 ounces of water to make a 25% alcohol solution since 48/(48 + 144) = 48/192 = 1/4 = 25%.

Alternate Solution:

To 48 ounces of 100% alcohol we add x ounces of water (which has 0% alcohol), and we obtain (48 + x) ounces of solution that is 25% alcohol. We can translate this into the equation:

48 * 1 + x * 0 = (48 + x) * 0.25

48 = 12 + 0.25x

36= 0.25x

144 = x

48/(48+144)=48/192=1/4=25%.
Hence B

is it possible to do this math by alligation method?
