Of the following, which is most nearly equal to \(\frac{2}{3}\) ?

A. \(\frac{3}{4}\)

B. \(\frac{5}{6}\)

C. \(\frac{7}{9}\)

D. \(\frac{11}{15}\)

E. \(\frac{15}{21}\)

We can convert the denominator of 2/3 easily to the match the denominators in choices B to E, and they are 4/6, 6/9, 10/15, 14/21, respectively. We see that each numerator in choices B to E is 1 more than the equivalent fraction of 2/3. In this case, the larger the numerator, the closer the fraction is to 2/3. Thus 15/21 is closest to 14/21 = 2/3. This leaves us with choice A to consider. Since 3/4 = 63/84, 15/21 = 60/84 and 2/3 = 56/84, we see that 15/21 is closer to 2/3 than ¾ is.

Answer: E

Solution

To find
    • Among the given fraction, which is closet to 2/3 or 0.66

Approach and Working out

Let’s check each option.
Option A: 3/4
    • 3/4 = 0.75
    • Distance from 2/3 = 3/4 – 2/3 = 0.09

Option B: 5/6
    • 5/ 6 = 0.83
    • Farthest from ¾

Option C: 7/9
    • 7/9 = 0.77
    • Farthest from ¾

Option D: 11/15
    • 11/15 = 0.73
    • nearest from ¾

Option E: 15/21
    • 15/21 = 5/7 = 0.71
    • nearest from 11/15

Thus, option E is the correct answer.

Correct Answer: Option E

2/3 = 0.67 = 4/6 = 6/9 = 10/15 = 14/21
because all of our possible answers (with the exception of 3/4, which can be eliminated as an answer immediately) are equal to 1 fraction more than the equivalent of 2/3, the answer with the larger denominator will be closest, in this case 15/21 (E)
