Let's assume that number of nickles and dimes are n and d respectively.
So, from the information given, we know that n+d=14.
Accordingly, value of n nickles=n*$0.05, and value of d dimes=d*$0.10
Since total value of 14 coins is $1.10, we can imply that n*$0.05+d*$0.10=$1.10
Now, combining n+d=14 and n*$0.05+d*$0.10=$1.10 and solving them simultaneously we get that n=6.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C.

4 nickels is .2 but then you have 10 dimes worth a 1$. Doesn't add up to 1.1
6 nickels is .3 then you have 8 dimes worth .8$ that adds up to 1.1. So we're good
