hi Bunuel, if one had to assume number, how would the approach be like?
i couldn't form an algebraic solution, but i couldn't think on how to pick numbers too
i considered initially mangoes bought was 10 and after the increase in price only 6 can be bought.
6 for 60 is 10 dollars per mango
if 10 is 1.2x, then i am stuck

could you please help

thanks in advance,
swetha

Assuming numbers is not a good approach here because the quantities are already fixed by the information in the question. Randomly chosen numbers may not satisfy the given conditions. In this case, the original number of mangoes was 24, and after the price increase, it was 20.

how do you solve this question please

Since prices of mangoes went up by 20%, a housewife was able to purchase 4 mangoes less in for $60. What was the original price of each mango?

A. $2
B. $2.2
C. $2.4
D. $2.5
E. $3

Let the original price of each mango be x dollars.

After a 20% increase, the new price is 1.2x dollars.

For $60, the number of mangoes purchased decreased by 4:

60/x - 60/(1.2x) = 4

60/x - 50/x = 4

10/x = 4

x = 2.5

Answer: D.
