All the solutions above are :[ (# of flights/day)*(# of passenger/day ] / (#of flights) so answer is = (passenger/day^2)
Could you please explain how did you get an answer of (passenger/day) ?

We see that 50% of the flights were on Monday, 30% on Tuesday and 20% on Wednesday. Therefore, the average number of passengers per flight for the three-day period is:

200 x 0.5 + 220 x 0.3 + 240 x 0.2

100 + 66 + 48

214

Alternate Solution:

Let’s assume that there were 10 flights total for the 3 days. Thus, there were 5 flights on Monday, 3 flights on Tuesday, and 2 flights on Wednesday. We can calculate the weighted average:

Average = (200 x 5 + 220 x 3 + 240 x 2) / 10

Average = 2140/10

Average = 214

Answer: D

Hi Scott,

Could you please explain how you arrive at - "We see that 50% of the flights were on Monday, 30% on Tuesday and 20% on Wednesday." from the question stem?

I have some trouble translating the following statement from the question into a solvable format - "If 1/2 of the total flights were on Monday, and there were 3/2 as many flights on Tuesday as on Wednesday".

I've tried plugging in the values for no.of flights. Let the no.of flights for the three days be x.

The ratios are: x/2 for Monday, that leaves us with x/2 more.

Tuesday/Wednesday= 3/2 ==> this gives us Tuesday= 3/5*x/2=3x/10
Wednesday= 2/5*x/2= x/5

Assuming x=10 for calculation purposes, the number of flights are:
Monday=10/2=5; Tuesday=3*10/10=3; Wednesday=10/5=2

Now calculating the avg passengers: Total passengers/no.of flights for the three days
= (5*200+3*220+2*240)/10= 214

My question is this: If the average number of passengers per day is 200 on Monday and we say there were 5 flights on Monday then how is it possible that the average number of passengers per FLIGHT will be 214 even if that refers to the entire three day period? The way the question is phrased i really don't see it. And even when it comes to the "1/2 of the total flights were on Monday, and 3/2 as many flights on Tuesday as on Wednesday" this would usually mean 3/2 of the 1/2 of the total flights. If someone can explain how do you translate this phrasing of the question to the way it is assumed in the solutions written above i would really appreciate it. Because if i assume the same things i solve it quickly but i just don't see how these assumptions stem from that phrasing of the question.

The phrasing of the graph is wrong. It should be "Average number of passengers PER FLIGHT". You only get to the solution with assuming the graph means this.
