Pretty simple to just plug away doing
31-5 = 26
26-5 = 21
21-5 = 16

4*4 = 16
5*3 = 15

Or you can do:

5x+4y = 31; x+y = 7
5x + 4(7-x) = 31
x+28 = 31
x=3
y=7-3=4

(A) 1
(B) 2

(E) 5

We can create the equations:

P + R = 7

R = 7 - P

and

5P + 4R = 31

Substituting, we have:

5P + 4(7 - P) = 31

5P + 28 - 4P = 31

P = 3

Answer: C

Let the pounds of premium chocolate candies = x pounds

5x + 4(7-x) = 31
x + 28 = 31
x = 3
