Ayush spent 44% of his monthly salary on accommodation and 1/8?ℎ of the remaining salary on study material. He also spent 71 (3/7)% of the remaining salary on buying some clothes and remaining amount he saves. If saving of Ayush is 16 (2/3)% of Abhi’s monthly salary then find Ayush’s expense on study material if Abhi’s annual salary is 252000.
(a) Rs. 1500
(b) Rs. 1850
(c) Rs. 1750
(d) Rs. 1900
(e) Rs. 1600

Since Abhi’s monthly salary is 252000/12 = 21000 and 16 (2/3)% = 1/6, Ayush saves 1/6 x 21000 = 3500 every month. If we let A = Ayush’s monthly salary, we can create the equation (notice that the first remaining salary (after 44%) is 56% of the total salary and 71 (3/7)% = 5/7):

A - [0.44A + 1/8 x 0.56A + 5/7 x (A - 0.44A - 1/8 x 0.56A)] = 3500

A - [0.44A + 0.07A + 5/7 x 0.49A] = 3500

A - [0.44A + 0.07A + 0.35A] = 3500

A - 0.86A = 3500

0.14A = 3500

Notice that Ayush’s expense on study material is 0.07A and since 0.14A = 3500, 0.07A = 3500/2 = 1750.

What's wrong in doing
1/8 * (21,000 - 44/100 (21,000)) ?
This would translate to 1/8 of the remaining salary after the accommodation was taken care of.
