A mixture of 24 litres contains water and milk in the ratio 3: 5. How much water must be added to this mixture to reverse the ratio?

A. 24 litres
B. 20 litres
C. 18 litres
D. 16 litres
E. 15 litres

Based on the ratio, we can determine that 3/8 of the mixture is water and 5/8 is milk. To determine how many liters of milk and water are in the mixture, multiply the fractions by 24. You'll find that there are 9 liters of milk and 15 liters of water. Since the question is asking us to find how many liters of water we would need to get a ratio of 5:3, you can set up an algebraic equation: 5/3 = (9 + x)/15, where x is the number of liters of water that need to be added. x = 16, so the answer is (D).

Orginal Ratio : 3W + 5M = 24
Expected Ratio : 5W + 3M = 24 + x (here "x" being the added water)

Step 1: Calculating the original water = 3W/8*24=9W; The yields us 15M.
Step 2: How much water to add such that we achieve the expected ratio of 5W:3M
(9+X)/15=5/3
(9+x)=5/3*15
(9+x)=25
x=25-9
x=16

Hence we need to add 16W to 24 to make the ratio 5W:3M.
I hope you find this helpful.

Cheers,

Water and milk are given in the ratio 3:5, hence quantity of mixture would be 3x + 5x = 24.

8x = 24
x= 3

Hence, water = 9 L and milk = 15 L.

'y' L of water is added in the mixture to bring the ratio W:M = 5:3.

So, 9 + y / 15 = 5 / 3
y = 16 L

Hence 16L of water is added to the mixture to bring the ratio to 5:3.

Current amount of water: 24 x 3/8 = 9 liters
Current amount of milk = 24-9 = 15 liters
We want to add X amount of water so that the ratio of water to milk will be reversed. Currently, it's 3:5 so reversed is 5:3. Or the percentage of water in the new mixture is 5:8
From given information, we will have: 9+X = 5/8* (24+X)
Or, 9+ X = 15 + 5/8 X <=> 3/8 X =6 <=> X = 16.
