Jackie has a prescription for 100 pills to be taken, one every 8 hours, at 7 a.m., 3 p.m., and 11 p.m. each day. If she takes the first pill at 3 p.m. on July 1, when should she take the last pill in the prescription?

A. August 1 at 11 p.m.
B. August 2 at 3 p.m.
C. August 2 at 11 p.m.
D. August 3 at 7 a.m.
E. August 3 at 3 p.m.

PS20408

100 pills, taken 3 times a day.

She took the first pill at 3 pm. The next two pills will be taken at 11 pm and 7 am respectively. Notice that at 7am she completed her first cycle of pills. Each cycle is completed at 7 am.

Since we have 1 more than a multiple of 3 (99 + 1), this must mean she finishes the 100 pills at 3 pm.

Since there are 31 days in July, she finishes her pills on August 3 at 3 pm. Answer is E.

For this question, it may help to "change" the starting point and adjust things towards the end. Instead of taking the first pill at 3:00 pm on July 1, let's imagine it was 7:00 am on July 1st. The reason being it may be easier to allocate 3 pills to a single day this way.

July 1 - 3 pills
July 2 - 6 pills
...

July 31 - 93 pills
Aug 1 - 96 pills
Aug 2 - 99 pills
Aug 3 - 102 pills

If Jackie took the first pill at 7:00 am on July 1st, the 100th pill would be taken on Aug 3 at 7:00 am.

But because it was actually taken 8 hours later, the 100th pill would also be taken 8 hours later. The correct answer is therefore Aug 3, 3:00 pm.

31*3-1=92 pills will be in July.
Next 6 pills will be taken on August 1 & 2.
Next 2 pills will be taken on August 3 on 7 AM and 3 PM.

Last pill will be taken on August 3 at 3 PM.
