Given: At IIM Bangalore, 60% of the students are boys and the rest are girls. Further 15% of the boys and 7.5% of the girls are getting a fee waiver.

Asked: If the number of those getting a fee waiver is 900, find the total number of students getting 50% concession if it is given that 50% of those not getting a fee waiver are eligible to get half fee concession?

% of total students (boys) getting a fee waiver = 60%*15% = 9%
% of total students (girls) getting a fee waiver = 40%*7.5% = 3%
% of total students getting a fee waiver = 9% + 3% = 12%
12% of total students = 900
Total students = 900/12% = 7500

50% of those not getting a fee waiver = 50% (7500 - 900) = 50% (6600) = 3300

Given that 60% are boys, out of which 15% get a fee waiver.
So, % of boys that get a fee waiver would be 15% of 60% which is 9%.
[10% of 60%=6, 5% of 60%=3 and so 15% of 60% would be 6+3=9%]

% of girls is 40%, out of which 7.5% get a fee waiver.
So, % of girls that get a fee waiver would be 7.5% of 40% which is 3%.
[10% of 40=4, 2,5% of 40=1 and so 7.5% would be 3]

Therefore, total % of students that get a fee waiver would be 12%.
12% of the total is 900.
so 4% of the Toal is 300.
Therefore 100% of the total would be 300*25=7500.

No. of students who did not get a few waiver=7500-900=6600.
Therefore, 50% of 6600=3300.

Hope this helps.
