In an election, Party X obtained 8% more votes than Party Y. If only these 2 parties had candidates in the election and no votes were invalid, what percentage of the total votes did Party Y obtain?

A)46%

B)48%

C)54%

D)62%

E)92%

If a real GMAT question is asking for an approximate value, the question must always say so. In this question, we know if Y got 100 votes, then X got 108 votes, so Y got 100 out of every 208 votes, which is, rounding off to two decimal places, 48.08%. The exact answer is not among the answer choices; only an approximation is. So this is not a realistic question; what is the source?

Let Y go 100 votes, so X got 108 votes....

Total no of votes polled is 208 votes

Thus, percentage of the total votes did Party Y obtain is \(\frac{100}{208}*100\) ~ 48% , Answer must be (B)
