If  3+x+x+x=1+x+x+x+x+x , what is the value of x ?

Therefore 3 + 3x = 1 + 4x

Taking x to one side 4x - 3x = 3 - 1

2x = 2

You might want to revisit your solution -- there are two separate mistakes that I've highlighted above (in the first, the expression in the question was not copied correctly).

To solve here, of course it's perfectly good to combine the x's on either side first. You can also just erase equal numbers of x's from either side:

3 + x + x + x = 1 + x + x + x + x + x
3 = 1 + x + x

and if you wanted to, you could even avoid combining the remaining x's by rewriting the '3' on the right as a sum of three 1s:

1 + 1 + 1 = 1 + x + x
1 + 1 = x + x

and x clearly equals 1.
