For the first part of the journey, A's total distance is 24 miles at a rate of 3 miles per hour. So the time has to be 24/3 = 8 hours.

For the second part of the journey, A's distance is 6 miles and took 4 hours to complete it.

Average speed = Total Distance/Total Time
= (24+6)/(8+4)
= 5/2 = 2.5
