A pump can be used either to fill or to empty a tank. The capacity of the tank is 3600 m^3. The emptying capacity of the pump is 10 m^3/min higher than its filling capacity. What is the emptying capacity of the pump if the pump needs 12 more minutes to fill the tank than to empty it?

Let the filling capacity be x m^3/min and emptying capacity be x+10 m^3 / min
As per question
3600/x+10 + 12 = 3600/x
3600(x) + 12(x+10)(x) = 3600(x+10)
12x^2 + 120x = 36000
x^2 +10x - 3000 =0
x^2 + 60x -50x -3000 = 0
thus x = -60 or 50
negative is not possible so x = 50 and emptying capacity is 60 m^3/min
As per question
3600/x+10 + 12 = 3600/x
3600(x) + 12(x+10)(x) = 3600(x+10)
12x^2 + 120x = 36000
x^2 +10x - 3000 =0
x^2 + 60x -50x -3000 = 0
thus x = -60 or 50
negative is not possible so x = 50 and emptying capacity is 60 m^3/min

Using the options wchich are give, we can get to the answer. The filling capacity is 10 less than the emptying capacity
Option A: Eliminated as the filling capacity is 0
Option B: Filling Capacity = 45 - 10 = 35 (This can be eliminated as 3600/35 is not an integer)
Option C: Filling Capacity = 50. Emptying time = 3600/60 = 60 minutes and filling time = 3600 / 50 = 72 minutes
The difference = 72 - 60 = 12 minutes (This should be our answer)
You may try the other 2 options in a similar manner.
Option D: Filling Capacity = 80. Emptying time = 3600/90 = 40 minutes and filling time = 3600 / 80 = 45 minutes.
Difference = 45 - 40 = 5 minutes
Option E: Filling Capacity = 90. Emptying time = 3600/100 = 36 minutes and filling time = 3600 / 90 = 40 minutes.
Difference = 40 - 36 = 4 minutes
