20 % \(= \frac{1}{5}\)
Depreciates, i.e \(\frac{(5-1)}{5} = \frac{4}{5}\)
for 2 years, \((\frac{4}{5})^2*1200= \frac{(4*4*1200*4)}{(5*5*4)} = 4*4*12*4 = 64*12= 768\)

1200 is the price

20% depriciation 1st year = 1200 * 0.2 = 240

price after 1st year = 1200 - 240 = 960

Dep. 2nd year = 960 * 0.2 = 192

Price 2nd year = 960 - 192 = 768

A musical instrument depreciates by 20% of its value each year. What is the value, after 2 years, of a piano purchased new for $1200?

(A) $48
(B) $675
(C) $768
(D) $912
(E) $1152
Solution:

After 2 years, the value of the piano is:

1200 x 0.8 x 0.8 = 1200 x 0.64 = $768
