What is the value of \(y^0 + y^{(–1)}\) when \(y = \frac{1}{2}\) ?

(A) 0.5
(B) 1.50
(C) 3
(D) 4
(E) 5

Useful property: \((\frac{a}{b})^{-n}=(\frac{b}{a})^{n}\)
Example: \((\frac{5}{2})^{-3}=(\frac{2}{5})^{3}\)

So, we get: \(y^0 + y^{(–1)}=(\frac{1}{2})^0 + (\frac{1}{2})^{(–1)}\)

\(=1 + (\frac{2}{1})^{1}\)

\(=1 + 2\)

\(=3\)

Answer: C

What is the value of \(y^0 + y^{(–1)}\) when \(y = \frac{1}{2}\) ?

(A) 0.5
(B) 1.50
(C) 3
(D) 4
(E) 5
\(y^0 = 1 \) & \(y^{(–1)}\) given \(y = \frac{1}{2}\) , thus \(y = 2\)

Hence, \(y^0 + y^{(–1)} = 1 + 2 = 3\), Answer will be (C)

\(y^0 = 1\)

\(y^{-1}\) = \(\frac{1}{y}\)

For y = \(\frac{1}{2}\)= \( \frac{1}{\frac{1}{2}}\)

=> 1 + 2 = 3
