The price of a hat and scarf is $38. The hat cost $3 more than the scarf. What is the price of the scarf?

(A) $17.50
(B) $18
(C) $18.50
(D) $19
(E) $20.50

The hat cost $3 more than the scarf
Let x = the price of the scarf
So, x + 3 = the price of the Hat

The price of a hat and scarf is $38.
We can write: (x +3) + x = 38
Simplify: 2x + 3 = 38
Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 35
Divide both sides by 2 to get: x = 17.5

So the price of a scarf is $17.50

Answer: A

The easiest approach to solve this question using algebra would be to consider the price of the hat as \(x\). And make the equations, \(x+(x+3)=38 \), and solve \(x\).

Another option would be to use the answer choices, consider (A) $17.50 and (E) $20.50, this sum up to \($17.50+$20.50= $38\) and when subtracted resulted in \($20.50-$17.50=3\).

Ans A
