The ratio of the arithmetic mean of two numbers to one of the numbers is 3:5. What is the ratio of the lesser number to the greater?

(A) 1:5
(B) 1:4
(C) 1:3
(D) 2:5
(E) 1:2

Let, x and y are the numbers

\(\frac{x+y}{2}*\frac{1}{x}=\frac{3}{5}\)

\(=\frac{x+y}{2x}=\frac{3}{5}\)

\(=6x=5x+5y\)

\(=x=5y \)[So, y is the smaller number]

\(=\frac{y}{x}=\frac{1}{5}\)

The answer is \(A\)
