"Out of every 7 students learning science, 3 take literature as well". Given the question criteria, we may rewrite this as "out of every 7 students learning science, 4 learn science ONLY." Thus if 10% are learning science only, we have \(10/\frac{4}{7} = 10*\frac{7}{4} = 17.5\) percent learning science in total.

Good question! You would like to ignore this info after reading the question because it tells us something about "3 students" which isn't useful when we don't know the total amount of students. Every other quantity and the answers are in percentages/ratios, so there is no use for a single value.

If 10% of the students take only science (Science - Literature) then Science = ?
Let the total % of students in Science is S
>> S - 3/7 (S) = 10%
>> 4s = 70%
>> s = 17.5%
