A man is standing on a railway bridge which is 70 m long. The man finds that a train crosses the bridge in \(5 \frac{1}{2}\) seconds but the man himself in 2 sec. What is the length of the train and its speed?

(C) 100 m, 50 km/hr.

Let the length of the train = x and its speed = y m/s
Time = Distance / Speed
When crossing the bridge, 5.5 = (70 + x) / y ... (1)
When crossing the man, 2 = x / y. Therefore x = 2y ... (2)
Putting (2) in (1), we get 5.5 = (70 + 2y) / y
5.5y = 70 + 2y
3.5 y = 70
y = 20 m/s = 20 * (18/5) = 72 km / hr
x = 2y = 2 * 20 = 40 m
