Hello,

Per your calculations, you arrived at

9 men take 6 days.

So, 12 men will actually take 8 days, no? Which is not in any of the answer choice?

Please advise, Thank you.

Hey princejero, I'm afraid what you're saying is not correct. That is not how you form equations for work rate. I'd suggest reading up the topic a little more.

But forget the traditional approach, I'd like to focus on what you said in the highlighted part. If 9 men do the job in 6 days, shouldn't increasing the number of men reduce the time? Think logically, why would adding additional help increase the time taken to do the job?

Also, the equation would be m1d1 = m2*d2. Where m1=9, d1=6 and m2=12. Hence, d2 = 9/2.

Hope this helps!

Forget Math, think logic.

9 men take 6 days to complete a work. If I put 12 men to work instead, will I take more days or fewer? I have more people working on the same thing. So of course time taken will reduce. Now my work will get done in fewer than 6 days.
Technically I can say that men and days vary inversely. If I have more men, I need fewer days.
With inverse variation, M1 *D1 = M2 * D2

9 * 6 = 12 * D2
D2 = 4.5 days
