Solution:

The perfect squares from 2 to 40, inclusive, are 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36. The primes from 2 to 40 inclusive are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, and 37. Since there are 5 perfect squares and 12 primes and 40 - 2 + 1 = 39 integers in total (and notice that no integers are both perfect square and prime), the probability of selecting a perfect square or a prime is (5 + 12)/39 = 17/39.

Answer: A
