Approach and Working out

Let the population of Mitannia in 1980 be 100x.
    • Then, population in 1990 = 100x + 6% of 100x = 106x
    • And population in 2000 = 106x - 3% of 106x
      o 106x – 3.18x = 102.82x

Overall, the population went from 100x in 1980 to 102.82x in 2000.
So, the % increase = (2.82x/100x) × 100 = 2.82%
