An Ice-cream parlor buys milk-cream cartons, each containing 5/2 cups of milk-cream. If the restaurant uses 1/2 cup of the milk-cream in each serving of its ice-cream, what is the least number of cartons needed to prepare 98 servings of the ice-cream?
(A) 9
(B) 19
(C) 20
(D) 21
(E) 24
\(98\) servings will require \(\frac{1}{2}*98 = 49\) cups of milk.
\(48\) cups will require \(\frac{2}{5}*49 = \frac{98}{5} = 19 \frac{3}{5}\) Cartons.
or Minimum \(20\) cartons are required

Hope it's clear.

Hi this isn't clear. Can you explain again?
summerbummer,
We need to prepare \(98\) servings of ice cream
If each serving requires \(\frac{1}{2}\) cup of milk cream.
So what is total amount of Milk cream required ?
Total amount required = amount required in each serving * number of serving \(\frac{1}{2}*98 = 49\)
Hence we need
Total \(49\) cups of Milk cream
Now each carton has \( \frac{5}{2}\) cups of Milk cream.
So how many cartons will be required so that we can get total 49 cups of milk cream?
Total Milk cream = Milk cream in each carton * No. of cartons\(49 = \frac{5}{2} \)* No. of cartons
No of cartons = \(= \frac{49 * 2}{5} = \frac {98}{5}= 19 \frac{3}{5}\)
Since we can only have cartons in whole numbers we need a minimum of \(20\) cartons to serve \( 98 \) ice creams .
If anything still remains unclear , please quote the exact line which is unclear so that I can a better assist you. Thank you.
