The mean of 100 observations was calculated as 40. It was found later that one of the observations was missed as 83 instead of 53. What is the correct mean ?

(A) 39
(B) 39.7
(C) 40.3
(D) 42.7
(E) 45.7

Since one observation was taken as 83 instead of 53, we added 30 (=83-53) extra to the total by mistake.

Thus, the total would be 30 less
Hence, the average of the 100 terms would be less by 30/100 = 0.3

Actual average = 40-0.3 = 39.7

40*100 = 4,000

one measurement was 30 too large - 83 versus 53.

so 4,000 - 30 = 3970

3970/100 = 39.7
