The mean of 100 observations was calculated as 40. It was found later that one of the observations was missed as 83 instead of 53. What is the correct mean ?

First, as higher number was added the average increases to 40, which should have been less than that.
30 was the difference which gets divided in 40 parts i.e. 3/4 less than the average wrongly calculated.
\(\implies\) 40 - 3/4 ~ 39.75.
Answer B.

\(Average = \frac{Total Sum}{Total Number}\)
So, the earlier calculated total was = 40 * 100 = 4000
From this total, 83 - 53 = 30 is wrongly added extra
So, the actual total should be 4000 - 30 = 3970 (To remove the extra value)
PS: The number of observations is still = 100
\(Correct average = \frac{3970}{100}\)
Correct average = 39.7
