300 first-time customers of a fashion store were surveyed for their shopping experience right after leaving the store. 60% of the customers in the survey had purchased clothes for less than $100. 40% of the customers in the survey reported they were overall satisfied with their purchase. 25% of the customers that had purchased clothes for less than $100 reported they were overall satisfied with their purchase. What percent of the customers surveyed purchased clothes for at least $100 and reported that they were NOT overall satisfied with their purchase?
A. 15
B. 25
C. 35
D. 45
E. 75
Solution:

  • Best way to solve such question is to make 2*2 grid
Attachment:
satisfied.png
satisfied.png [ 3.95 KiB | Viewed 3540 times ]
  • Customers who purchased clothes for < $100 = 60% of 300 = 180
  • Therefore, ≥ $100 = 300 - 180 = 120
Attachment:
satisfied1.png
satisfied1.png [ 4.43 KiB | Viewed 3519 times ]
  • Overall satisfied customer = 40% of 300 = 120
  • Therefore, unsatisfied customer = 300 - 120 = 180
Attachment:

  • Customer who bought < $100 and satisfied = 25% of 180 = 45
  • After which we can fill all the rest of the cells

  • Percent of the customers purchased clothes for at least $100 and reported that they were NOT overall satisfied \(=\frac{45}{300}\times 100=15\%\)

Hence the right answer is Option A

There's nothing wrong with any of the previous answers in this thread, but it is worth noting that since the question asks for the percent of the total customers, we can work with the percentages throughout rather than with the actual numbers. Why convert from percentages to customers only to have to convert back at the end? Just fill in the grid the same way those other folks did, but with 100% rather than 300 customers, 60% where they have 180 customers, 40% where they have 120 customers, etc....you end up with 15% in the box in question.

Answer choice A.
