I somehow feel question isnt clear.
The 1st sentence says car travels 140miles in 4 hours. I assumed total distance itself is 140miles.

The return journey took 3 and 1/2 hrs while onward journey toom nly 1/2 hr .

Maybe no need for a shortcut here since the calculation (140 + 140) / (4 + 3.5) is not too arduous, but we can avoid it if we want to:

- one way the car's speed was 35 mph, and on the return journey, it was 40 mph, so the average speed is in between 35 and 40

- but the car spent more time driving at 35 mph than at 40 mph, so the average speed must be closer to 35 than to 40 (average speed is a weighted average, weighted by the time spent at each speed). Answer B must be right.
