Solution:

Let Selling Price of 1 pen be SP and Cost price of 1 pen be CP

Hence Selling Price of 630 pens = 630 SP and Cost price of 630 pens=630 CP

=>Profit = 630 SP -630 CP and this profit is equal to the Selling Price of 90 pens = 90SP

=> 90 SP = 630 SP -630 CP

=> 630 CP = 540 SP

=> CP /SP = 540/630---->CP corresponds to 540 and SP corresponds to 630

=> Profit% = 630-540/540 *100

=90/540*100

=1/6 *100 = 16.67% (option c)

On selling 630 pens, a shopkeeper makes a profit equal to the selling price of 90 pens. Find the approximate profit percentage.

Cost price: 630 - 90 = 540 [If he sells 630 pens, he makes a profit of S.P. of 90 pens which means he has bought 630 - 90 pens]

Profit (%) = \(\frac{90 }{ 540} * 100 = \)16.67%

On selling 630 pens, a shopkeeper makes a profit equal to the selling price of 90 pens. Find the approximate profit percentage.

(A) 12.5%
(B) 14.28%
(C) 16.67%
(D) 20%
(E) 22.22%
Assuming y as SP and x as CP
630y-630x = 90y
7y-7x=y
6y=7x
\(\frac{y}{x} = \frac{7}{6}\)
\(profit percentage = \frac{y-x}{x}*100 = \frac{100}{6}\)
Answer is C.

Hello, I need help understanding why the profit percentage is calculated based on cost rather than revenue. I might have an issue grasping when to use which. In this question, I don't understand why the profit percentage is based on cost, not revenue, as this is my usual understanding of profit percentage.

Cost of a pen = x
Profit =90x
SP= 630x

Profit = SP-CP
CP= 540x

Profit percentage = profit/CP x 100
90x/540x *100
=16.67

Profit percentage is usually based on cost because it shows how much profit is made relative to the investment.

Hi

You got the numerator right but..
It will be 90SP/540SP x 100 = 16.66%

We are calculating the CP by deducting the profit from SP of 630 pens. So, 630SP - 90SP = 540SP is the CP.
LaveenaPanchal
If selling price is x then profit = 90x/630x ×100 = 14.28%
