speed of bus = 40 k/h
speed of truck = 30 k/h
both has 8 ltr of diesel. and the consumption rate is 30km/hr

so bus will travel 240 km with this rate of consumption.
and to travel 240 km, time taken by bus = 240/40 = 6hrs

and we know truck started 1 hr late. so it must have travelled for 5 hrs before it ran out of diesel.
so distance travelled by truck=150 km

so difference in distance between bus and truck = 240 - 150 =90 km

option C

A bus started driving towards the North from point X, travelling at a constant rate of 40 km per hour. An hour later, a truck started driving towards the North from the same point X at a constant rate of 30 km per hour. If each vehicle started with 8 litres of diesel, that was consumed at a rate of 30 km per litre, how many kilometres apart were the two vehicles when the bus ran out of fuel?

(A) 30
(B) 60
(C) 90
(D) 120
(E) 150

Step 1: Find how far the bus can travel
Each vehicle has 8 litres of diesel and uses fuel at 30 km per litre.

Total distance the bus can travel = 8 × 30 = 240 km

Step 2: Find when the bus runs out of fuel
The bus travels at 40 km/hr.

Time for bus to run out of fuel = 240 ÷ 40 = 6 hours

Step 3: Find how long the truck has been traveling at this moment
The truck started 1 hour AFTER the bus.

So when the bus has been traveling for 6 hours, the truck has been traveling for only 6 - 1 = 5 hours.

Step 4: Find the truck's position
The truck travels at 30 km/hr for 5 hours.

Distance covered by truck = 30 × 5 = 150 km

Step 5: Find the distance between them
• Bus position: 240 km north of X
• Truck position: 150 km north of X

Distance apart = 240 - 150 = 90 km

at the given rate of 30 km/ ltr both vehicles can go max of 240 kms with 8 ltrs of diesel.
time for bus to travel 240 kms=240/40=6 hrs
now since bus has already travelled 1 hr when the truck begins
so truck travels a distance of 5 hr*30 km/hr=150 kms
so gap between bus and truck=240-150=90 kms
