Given: A bag of rice is currently priced at $320 and a bag of wheat at $580. The price of rice is increasing at a constant rate of 5x dollars per day while the price of wheat is decreasing at a constant rate of 7x dollars per day.

Asked: What is the approximate price when a bag of rice costs the same as a bag of wheat?

Condition when both prices are same: -
320 + 5x = 580 - 7x
12x = 260
x = 260/12 = 21 2/3

The approximate price when a bag of rice costs the same as a bag of wheat = 320 + 5*21 2/3 = 320 + 105 + 3 1/3 = 428 1/3

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. But, I don’t think it was mentioned the prices were same the very next day.
I think Kalli1’s method is the right one.

320+5xd=580-7xd will be the equation and we would get 260=12xd. Where d is the no of days passed.

What is the approximate price when a bag of rice costs the same as a bag of wheat?

We can do this question without solving just using the logic.
We know that magnitude of rate of increase for rice bag is slower than rate of decrease for wheat bag.

(A) 450 is not possible because it is gain of 160 for rice and loss of 160 for wheat but we have uneven rates of increase/decrease.

(B) 460 is not possible because it is gain of 160 for rice but a decrease of 120 for wheat but we know that wheat decrease rate is greater than rice increase rate.

(C) 530 is not possible due to same logic as (B)

(D) 420 is the only feasible option, it is gain of 100 for rice but a decrease of 160 for wheat, makes sense based on magnitude of rates for rice and wheat.

(E) 970, it is not at all possible

(D) is the answer
