On Christmas, Susanne bought a few flowers for $1. The flower vendor was running a special Christmas offer which Susanne did not opt for. Had she opted for the offer, she would have spent $2 but got 30 more flowers and saved 60 cents per each dozen of flowers. How many flowers did she buy?

Lets assume
a flowers for $1 at rate $b/12 per flower
a + 30 flowers for $2 at rate ($b-$0.6)/12 per flower
Hence we get ab = $12 and
(a+30)(b - 0.6)/12 = $2
Now ab + 30b -0.6a - 18 = 24
12 + 30b - 0.6a - 18 = 24
30b - 0.6a = 30
10b - 0.2a = 10
120 - 0.2^a = 10a
0.2a^2 + 10a - 120 = 0
2a^2 + 100a - 1200 = 0
a^2 + 50a - 600 = 0
a^2 + 60a -10a - 600 = 0
(a + 60)(a - 10) = 0
-> a = 10
