Deconstructing the Question
Among undergraduates:
\(\text{with AD} : \text{without AD} = 1:3\)

Graduate : Undergraduate = \(1:5\).

All students are either undergraduate or graduate.
Find:
\(\text{(UG without AD)} : \text{(total students)}\)

Step-by-step
Let total undergraduates be \(4x\).
Then:
\(\text{UG without AD} = 3x\)

From Graduate : Undergraduate = \(1:5\):
\(\text{Graduate}=\frac{1}{5}\cdot 4x=\frac{4x}{5}\)

Total students:
\(4x+\frac{4x}{5}=\frac{24x}{5}\)

Required ratio:
\(\frac{3x}{24x/5}=\frac{15}{24}=\frac{5}{8}\)

Answer: D (5:8)

here undergraduate students are classified into undergraduate students with associate degree and without associate degree. Let 'a' be the number of students with associate degree and '3a' becomes without associate degree based on the information given in the question.

hence no of undergraduate students is a+3a =4a

now the ratio to graduate and undergraduate students is given as 1:5, from this it becomes graduate students equals to 4a/5.

the asked ratio in the question is for undergraduate students without associate degree and total students, it becomes 3a/(4a+4a/5) = 15/24 = 5/8.

answer is 5/8.

say total students are 120
now ratio of graduate to undergard is 1:5
so total 6x.
that means 6x = 120
x = 20
so grad = 20 and undergrad =100

now ratio of underdrad associates to undergrad not associates = 1:3
so total 4p and we have total undergrad students = 100. so p= 25
so ratio for undergard associates to undergrad not associates = 25:75

we need to find ratio of undergrad not associates to total students.
# of undergrad not associates = 75
# of total students = 120
75:120 = 5:8

option D

At a certain university, the ratio of undergraduate students with an associate’s degree to those without an associate’s degree is 1:3. Additionally, the ratio of graduate students to undergraduate students is 1:5. If all students at the university are either undergraduate or graduate students, what is the ratio of undergraduates without an associate’s degree compared with the entire student body?

A. 1:15
B. 1:5
C. 3:8
D. 5:8
E. 4:5
