Given: A man is thrice as old as his son. The man was 42 years old when his son was born.
Asked: Find the age of the son when the man was seven times as old as the son?
Let the age of man and his son be m & s respectively.
A man is thrice as old as his son.
m = 3s
The man was 42 years old when his son was born.
m = s + 42
m = 3s = s + 42; 2s = 42; s = 21; m = 63;
The age of the son when the man was seven times as old as the son.
(m+k) = 7(s+k)
(63+k) = 7(21+k)
63 + k = 147 + 7k
6k = -84; k = -14
The age of the son when the man was seven times as old as the son = 21 - 14 = 7 years

Do we really the need the info. that the man is three times the age of his son?
When man is \(42\) son is \(0\)
Lets say \(y\) years after son being born,man becomes \(7\) times age of his son.
\(42 +y = 7 ( 0+ y)\) , \(\hspace{2mm}\) \(y =7\)
Hence \(7\) years after the son was born (Son's age) , fathers age \(= 7 *\) sons age.
