A person buys some apples and mangoes from the market at a rate such that a mango is twice as costly as an apple and he sells them such that a mango is thrice the price of an apple. By selling an apple at twice of its cost price, he makes 150% profit on the whole. What is the ratio of mangoes to apples ?

A. 1:2
B. 3:5
C. 3:4
D. 4:5
E. 5:6

Say cost of apple is A so cost of mango is 2A.
Selling price of apple is 2A so selling price of mango is 6A.
Profit on selling an apple is 100% and that on selling a mango is 200%.

If overall profit is 150%, it means the ratio of "total cost price" of apples: mangoes is 1:1. Recall that weights in case of profit% averaging is 'total cost price'.

Since cost of each mango is twice that of each apple, there must be half the number of mangoes compared to number of apples so that "total cost" of both is the same.

Answer A

Check here to read about what the weights are in weighted averages:
