Deconstructing the Question

Onions cost \(0.45\) and avocados cost \(1.25\).

Total spent is \(6.35\).

We find the total number of items.

Step-by-step

Let \(x\) be onions and \(y\) be avocados.

Multiply by \(100\):

\(45x + 125y = 635\)

Divide by \(5\):

\(9x + 25y = 127\)

Test values of \(y\):

\(y=4 \Rightarrow 9x = 27 \Rightarrow x=3\)

Total items:

\(x+y=7\)
