How was Y obtained i.e. decreased value of x muplitplied by 80% increase of its result? Can someone please explain?

Let the number x be 100.
When x is decreased by 60%, it will become 40.

Again after increasing by 80%, the number will be equal to y.
Thus, y = 40*(100+80)/100 = 180*40/100 = 72
Since x = 100 = 100*72/72 = 100/72*y = 25/18*y

Thus the correct option is D.

Make x 100

Perform the calc on 100:

-60% means multiply by 40% for the result, which is 40.

Increase 40 by 80% = 72

y = 72

Now plug 72 into the answer choices and solve: answer D yields 100 for us
