For Carla to earn commission, her sales need to exceed $150 000. When looking at the answer choices, three of them are below $150 000, and two are above. In other words there is a very strong chance that Carla does not earn any commission. Instead of creating an equation and solving for x, which may turn out to be a complete waste of time and leave one frustrated and confused, I will first assume that Carla made no commission.
If Carla made no commission, her salary will be $24 000. We are told that Erica made double that, so she made $48 000. This is $10 000 more than her base salary of $38 000. We know that her commission is 20% on sales she makes in excess of $90,000.
$10 000 is 20% of x:
\(\frac{1}{5}x = 10 000\)
\(x = 50 000\)
This is just her commission, to which we still need to include the $90 000 which is taken off in order to have the total annual sales: \(50 000+90 000 = 140 000\)
Answer C

I know most people don't find this as satisfying, elegant, or dignified as the algebra. Know what I find satisfying, elegant, and dignified? Q50 and Q51!!
Plugging In The Answers (PITA) is a great way to decrease silly algebraic mistakes and get more questions right faster and with an absolute minimum of brain damage or complexity.
I like trying B and D.
B: E makes 38000+0.2(30000) = 38000+6000 = 44000
C makes 24000+0.1(0) = 24000
E makes less than double what C makes.
D: E makes 38000+0.2(70000) = 38000+14000 = 52000
C makes 24000+0.1(10000) = 24000+1000 = 25000
E makes more than double what C makes.
We need something between those two answer choices.
Answer choice C.
