Given: A survey was conducted in a town to gauge the popularity of 2 luxury cars viz. Mercedes and Audi. A total of 800 persons participated in the survey. It was found that 544 persons liked Mercedes whereas only 378 persons liked Audi.

Asked: What can be the number of persons who liked Mercedes alone?

The hidden clues
1. Qs sentence said "can be", so we have to find a range for the possible answer.
2. There can be people among 800, who like neither marcedes nor Audi.

Now, the highest number of people liking both of the cars is 378(number of people liking audi)
And the lowest number of people in common area is

544+378-800= 122

Now, number of people liking Marcedes only lies between
(544-378) - (544-122)
166 to 422

Only option that lies between this range is D.

A. 122
B. 150
C. 165
D. 394
E. 425

Let

Both Cars = x (say)
Only Mercedes = 544-x
Only Audi = 378-x
None as preference = n (say)

MAX criterion

for n=0
x + 544-x + 378-x = 800
x= 122

Hence, Only Mercedes = 544-122 = 422

MIN criterion

This will happen when all persons who like Mercedes also like Audi
In such a case

Both Cars, ie, x = 378
Only Mercedes = 544-378 = 166
Only Audi = 0
None as preference, ie, n = 800-544 = 256

Clearly, the range for Mercedes only (ie, 544-x) will be

166 <= (544-x) <= 422

Only (D) can be the number of persons who liked Mercedes alone
