Given: A manufacturer of thermal flasks conducts an experiment on one of their flasks. The flask is filled with water at a temperature of 81℃, and placed in a refrigerator set to a temperature of 0℃.

Asked: If the temperature in degrees celsius is reduced by one third every six hours, what is the temperature of the water after 24 hours?

Initial temperature = 81℃
Temperature after 6 hours = 81 - 81/3 = 81 *2/3 = 54℃
Temperature after 12 hours = 54*2/3 = 36℃
Temperature after 18 hours = 36*2/3 = 24℃
Temperature after 24 hours = 24*2/3 = 16℃

Intial temperature = 81 C
Rate of temp reduce = 1/3 (in 6 hrs)
So temp after 6 hrs = 81-81*1/3 = 81*2/3
temp after 12 hrs = 81*2/3*2/3
temp after 18 hrs =81*2/3*2/3*2/3
temp agter 24 hrs =81*2/3*2/3*2/3*2/3 = 16 C (answer)

After the first six hours, the temperature of the water in the flask will become (1-1/3)*81 = (2/3)*81

Thus, after every 6 hours, the temperature of the water in the flask will become 2/3rd of its previous value.

So, after 24 hours, the temperature of the water = [(2/3)^4]*81
= [(2*2*2*2)/(3*3*3*3)]*81 = (16/81)*81 = 16

Thus the correct option is C.

Solved in 36 seconds, imo quickest route:
24/6 = 4 "drops" in temperature.
Each drop = \(\frac{1}{3}\), which means temperature is \(\frac{2}{3}\) after the drop.

Final Temp after 24 hours = \(81 * (\frac{2}{3})^4 = 3^4 *\frac{2^4}{3^4} = 2^4 = 16\)
