A national park that is in the shape of a square of side 40 metres has water pipe running along one of its diagonals. What is the probability that a tourist (who is inside the national park) finds himself more than 10 metres away from the water pipe?

(D)  (1- \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4})^2

Note that in order for a person to find himself 10 meters away from the diagonal pipe on both sides, you would draw a right triangle with a hypotenuse of 20 (There would be 2 of these) and then of course you have the rectangle with a length of 20 and a width of 40*sqrt(2) - 20. Subtracting the total area of the two triangles and the rectangle from the total area of the square, you end up with (40-10*sqrt(2))^2.

So the probability is ((40-10*sqrt(2))/40)^2 or (1-sqrt(2)/4)^2. Choose A
