Three travelers are sitting around a fire, and are about to eat a meal. One of them has 9 small loaves of bread, the second has 15 small loaves of bread and the third has no food. Nevertheless, they agree to share the loaves equally among them. If after the meal, the third person leaves $16 for his share of food, how much of this amount should the second person get ?

The total number of loaves of bread that they have is \(9 + 15 = 24\). Since they agreed to share the loaves equally, each person received \(\frac{24}{3} = 8\) loaves of bread. So, the third person paid \($16\) for 8 loaves of bread he got, or \($2\) per loaf. The second person contributed \(15 - 8 = 7\) loaves of bread to the third person, so the second person should get \(7*$2 = $14\).
