Three travellers are sitting around a fire, and are about to eat a meal. One of them has 9 small loaves of bread, the second has 15 small loaves of bread and the third has no food. Nevertheless, they agree to share the loaves equally among them. If after the meal, the third person leaves $16 for his share of food, how much of this amount should the second person get ?

A. $2
B. $8
C. $10
D. $12
E. $14

Fresh GMAT Club Tests' Question

First person = 9
Second person = 15
Total loaves of bread = 24

Food consumed equally between the three travelers => Each traveler consumed 8 loaves of bread
Third person had no food so he/she consumed whatever was bought by First and Second person and he/she pays $16 for his share of 8 loaves consumed

So, cost per loaf of bread = 16/8 = $2

Now, the third person has to distribute the $16 dollars between the First and Second person based on their respective contributions

Second person bought 15 loaves of bread = 15*2 = $30
But he/she also consumed 8 loaves of bread = 8*2 = $16
So, total that third person owes to second person = 30-16 = $14

Answer - E
